Ten Steps to a Federal Job® Training Program
Sept. 19, 2024 by Kathryn Troutman
Employment Specialists traveled to San Diego and learned the Ten Step lessons for their service members, veterans, spouses, and Federal employees who want their first Federal position … or to get promoted into a new position in government.
In attendance: MCCS MCRD San Diego, Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, Youngstown Air Reserve Station, 190 Air Refueling Wing, DOJ/DEA, Work For Warriors-California, Travis AFB
MOST FEDERAL RESUMES DO NOT INCLUDE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT STAND OUT ABOVE THE JOB DUTIES
The Ten Steps Certification program teaches employment specialists coaching methods to help their clients recognize, develop, and write their accomplishments for their federal resumes!
ACCOMPLISHMENTS DEMONSTRATE IMPORTANT CORE COMPETENCIES
These accomplishments demonstrate initiative, empathy, creativity/innovation, problem-solving, energy, mission-focus, and communication skills.
Here are a few accomplishments from this class of Military & Family Readiness Specialists:
As Army Recruiting Commander in 2014, the Recruitment Center finished 14th out of 4,034 recruitment centers and met every mission area. I achieved this by training and developing my team. I created a new metrics collection system to analyze data. I successfully utilized a new recruitment rule when working with High School Juniors.
Managed the first-ever installation of lactation pods on the installation with a strict budget – with each pod costing $20K. Could not get funding from the mission, so I requested funds from another unit. Wrote justification for supporting the mission. Coordinated with contracting and medical groups for purchasing. Customized the purchase and worked with Logistics Readiness Command for installation.
Recently as a part of small ad hoc group, I rewrote an unfavorable long-time Congressional legislation that the Guard and Reserve members who are deployed for 180 days are required to attend 5-day TAP program after every deployment! Submitted back to Congress requesting that the TAP be optional. Also wrote legislation requests to improve VA benefits for Guard Members’ entitlements to current benefits.
As the Work and Family Life Specialist at Youngstown Reserve Station for the last two years, I collected and distributed 18,000 diapers to financially struggling Airmen families. Working with a non-profit, I supported a food pantry that feeds 33 families and collected school supplies and Christmas gifts for over 1,400 homes.
COACHING FEDERAL JOBSEEKERS TO ADD ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO THEIR RESUMES.
The accomplishments are interesting and impressive and can get the jobseeker Referred to a Manager and help the applicant get Selected for the Interview.
The accomplishment stories prepare the client to talk about their achievements which will eventually become interview stories.
These accomplishments were written during the class. Many of the attendees used the popular Resume Place CCAR accomplishment builder tool.
