Imagine personally surviving the landfall of seventeen historic hurricanes, including Katrina… or running up to within a few hundred feet of a tornado… or getting hit by lightning!
Extreme-weather photographer Jim Reed describes these extraordinary experiences in the newly released, revised and expanded, Storm Chaser: A Photographer's Journey (Harry N. Abrams, New York, 2009).
Internationally known for his stunning, one-of-a-kind atmospheric portraits of America's changing climate, Reed has spent two decades creating an award-winning distinctive body of work. Artist, photojournalist, and professional storm chaser, Reed has photographed and experienced nearly every type of meteorological phenomena.
Through breathtaking photos, quotes, letters, and journal entries from climatologists, researchers, political leaders, spiritual advisors, and disaster survivors, Storm Chaser chronicles Reed's most thrilling adventures to date.
In 2004, Reed was nearly killed in Hurricane Charley when the cyclone rapidly intensified into nearly a category five hurricane as it struck Port Charlotte, Florida.
According to Reed's journal, storms have become larger, greater in number, and more frequent. Storm Chaser offers visual and written evidence, as well as advice on what families need to do to survive.
"Debating global warming has its value," writes Reed. "But from my experience in the field, I am convinced that we must immediately and simultaneously concentrate on adapting to our ever-increasing weekly weather challenges."
Newly released as a paperback with sixteen pages of new material, Storm Chaser provides even more groundbreaking images and gripping stories.
The hardcover edition of Storm Chaser received awards, critical acclaim and wide media attention. Holly Morris of The New York Times wrote, "These are the images that demonstrate the heart of weather's primal draw, and that hold the power to make weather fanatics out of even those of us whose first instinct is to run."
